The Cat is usually a black cat from the real globe. The cat functions being a mentor to Coraline and guides her by her journey. He is unnamed, as he describes that cats tend not to have to have names to inform each other apart, but another Mother refers to him as "Vermin". Unlike lots of the people during the novel, he does not have an "Other Plane
